T seems to follow Hitler's game plan after weaseling into power in 1933. Next on the check list is banning any party except the MAGA GOP. After that, could disband Congress, then shut down any semblance of a free press. Dissidents will be arrested at night and shipped to places like Alligator Auschwitz. Midterms in 2026? Not a chance.

I agree with all this in spirit, with some marginal disagreements. In contemporary times, despots usually keep legislatures they control in place, as a fig leaf of democracy. I suspect Trump will do that, though part of him surely longs for the feeling of utter control. At the rate things are progressing, midterms might be gone or fully corrupted. I've been anticipating still honest elections in Democratic-controlled states, with corrupted outcomes in the Republican. Talk of winning back control of the country by a purely peaceful and a legitimate presidential election is a delusion.

To put it mildly, this person must be removed from society.

We cannot allow Trump and his aims to continue ... I fear that the mid-term elections will not come soon enough: Peaceful demonstrations against what he has done, continues to do and won't stop doing are the order of the day on this July 4th! Again, we who read you, Jay, and admire you, salute you!

Thank you so much, Mary, but . . . I've long feared that the midterms would be legitimate only in the blue states, but I was saying earlier, in conversation with another reader, that now, given the speed of events and the decline, I have my doubts even about that. As Sonya Sotomayor was implying only yesterday, even the Supreme Court seems intent on easing Trump's path to despotic power.

I despair but do suggest that you read Timothy Snyder today on the detention camps. I now think Trump can be defeated. I realize that McCarthy was not a president but was supremely dangerous. Even in despair, I choose faith in the American people to finally realize that these MAGA folks must be defeated. Watching for more demonstrations today—and not July 4 celebrations. Let’s see how many folks come out to speak against fascism on Independence Day!

Trump is bad, thousands of times worse than his supporters. Trouble is he has millions of them.

You're a numbers guy -- what's the multiplier on millions times thousands of one?

Around 70 million voted for him, 7 x 10^7 divided by 1 x 10^3 = 7 ^ 10^4 or 70,000 Trumpworths.

So I was off by . . . a lot.

The secret sauce is counting the number of zeros in 70,000,000 and 1,000, which are 7 and 3, exponents of 10. 7-3=4. and 7/1 =7, so we get 7 plus 4 zeros = 70,000.
