You have me hooked now! I always mistakenly thought the papal Bull divided the world between Span and Portugal, not Spain and the rest of Christendom. And I NEVER knew that it was a basis for a SC decision. More importantly, I want to read more.

David, I'm so glad! So far, there are ten entries in the Magellanic Diaries for more reading, and then, of course, the novel, at the heart of my post tomorrow.

Effectively, the division was Spain and Portugal because no other nation at that time had the seafaring experience, fleet, or commitment those two were manifesting. And, yes, the rights of "Discovery," directly attributed to papal doctrine, are noted as an inheritance from colonial England in the USSC decision.
