This essay substantially revises and repurposes one that I published on Homo Vitruvius nearly three years ago under a different title. Few subscribers will have read it before. It occurred to me recently that it could very well serve, not as something so belligerently assertive as a manifesto or so blandly conventional as a “mission statement,” but rather as an expression of first principles, an essential self-presentation, in this case, of Homo Vitruvius.

Ecce: “behold.”1
